WHAT IS SOMATICS?
somatics is a window into a world of new and endless possibilities.
so·ma | /ˈsōmə/
is Greek for the
living organism
in its wholeness
so·ma·tics | /ˈsō·ma· tiks/
somatics is the body in it’s wholeness-- sensations, emotions, internal narratives, actions, non actions, values and worldview, embodied
"Somatics is a practice of listening to and inhabiting the intelligence of the body. It is a way of becoming conscious of how our bodies have been shaped by systems of power, culture, and personal experiences and how we can reshape them toward healing and liberation."
~ Prentice Hemphill

SOMATICS...
The practice of becoming more skillful at being human"
~ Stacie Haines

Invites us to live inside all of the aliveness that exist in our body to access it’s wisdom.

Tells us we are always practicing something.

Reminds us that we become what we practice.

Lets us know that we have transformed when we can stay committed to what matters most even under the same old pressure.

Moves us towards life, giving more life.

Knows it takes 300 purposeful reps to create muscle memory and 3,000 purposeful reps to create embodiment, or in other words, a new way of being.
EMBODIMENT
I think of embodiment as related, but inclusive of all the practices, rituals, and ceremonies that people have used across time to transform not only individual bodies but our collective bodies as well. The ceremonies, dances, and songs that every Indigenous culture around the world has created for birthing, for death, and for grief, to prepare for battle and the changing of seasons. The rituals that give people in community space to heal and express, and where we sync our bodies with one another’s and feel the presence of what we share that lies beyond
words.
Prentice Hemphill, The Embodiment Institute
